how to clean your guttersGutters can accumulate leaves and other debris clogging them. As the debris builds up, water can get trapped in the gutter causing it to rust or breakaway. It can also lead to ice damming which can cause your roof to leak when the ice melts. As a roofing company who values the trust of our customers, here are some tips to help homeowners avoid leaking roofs and roof repairs.

If you don’t have gutter guards, you will need to clean your gutters at least twice a year, and if you have a lot of trees, even more often. To prolong the life of gutters, it’s best to clean them of debris in early spring and in the fall.

First, if you have any overhanging trees, trim them back away from the roof and gutter system so whatever falls from them lands on the ground rather than on your home’s roofing and water drainage systems. Much of the debris found inside a gutter is composed of decaying leaves, twigs and pine needles that fall from overhanging trees. If this matter builds up in the gutter for a prolonged period of time, it creates a fertile environment for the tree’s falling seeds. This allows them to germinate and begin growing, using the gutter itself as a makeshift planter.
Second, you want to sweep any branches, twigs, seedpods, leaves and other debris off your roof. Anything left on the roof will wash into the clean gutter the next time it rains if you don’t sweep it up.
Third, you need to clean out the gutters themselves. Unfortunately, the most efficient way to do this is by using a ladder and pulling the debris out of the gutters by hand or with a special scoop available at most hardware stores.
As you collect the debris, you can either drop it onto the ground and rake it up when you’re finished or bag it as you pull it out. Choose the method that works best for you.

If you want to avoid having to clean your gutters, you can have gutter guards installed on your gutters. Whatever method you choose, keeping your gutters clean will prevent problems on your roof from backed up water and ice.
